Construction Details

| Through Dovetail We use through dovetails to join the main panels in our Dovetailed case pieces. Not only is this joint extremely strong, we feel it greatly enhances the clean, simple, contemporary lines of our case work. |

Mortise and Tenon
A round end tenon is machined on the end of a part,
such as a table apron or chair rail. The tenon fits snugly
into a matching mortise, or slot, in the adjoining vertical
part, such as a table or chair leg. This joint is glued
during assembly and then further strengthened with 1/4"
cherry dowel pins, glued and driven through the joint.
We use mortise and tenon joinery extensively in all
our dining tables, occasional tables and chairs.
Sliding Tapered Dovetail
We use sliding tapered dovetails to join the horizontal
cross rails to the sides of our case pieces. This cross rail
separates the drawers and adds a great deal of strength
to the case.
Drawers
Our drawers are constructed using full 5/8" thick ash sides and back. Dovetails are used to join all four corners. We use Accuride steel ball bearing drawer slides in all our furniture. These modern slides eliminate common problems like binding and misalignment of drawer fronts. They also provide smooth, quiet and effortless operation of the drawers.
Wood
We work primarily with cherry because of it's exceptional working properties and beauty. Cherry is a beautiful wood that over time develops a rich, warm patina. We buy only the highest grade of cherry available. We can also build your furniture in maple, walnut or other hardwoods. Contact us for more information.
Finish
We use a natural oil finish on our furniture. Unlike hard plastic-like finishes such as lacquer, an oil finish allows the wood to breathe and develop its rich patina as it ages. An oil finish is also easier to repair than other finishes and will not crack over time. After your piece of Kinion furniture is hand sanded to a smooth sheen with 220 grit sandpaper, three applications of oil are hand applied, and sanded between coats with 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper. The result is a satin-smooth finish that can only be appreciated by running your hand over a completely finished surface.
